Social Skills Programs in Townsville
Empowering individuals through compassionate, person-centred behaviour support that builds confidence, skills and independence for everyday life.
Your Support Team
At PoDDSS, we deliver structured Social Skills Programs for children, teenagers and adults across Townsville and North Queensland. These programs are designed to support individuals who may experience difficulty understanding social situations, communicating with others or building and maintaining relationships.
Our Social Skills Programs focus on education, skill-building and confidence, helping participants develop practical strategies they can use in everyday life at home, school, work and in the community.
While social skills development may complement Positive Behaviour Support, these programs are not behaviour management plans. Instead, they provide targeted learning opportunities to build understanding, communication and social awareness in a supportive and respectful environment.
Programs are tailored to participant needs and may include learning around:
- How to greet people and start conversations
- Understanding and using active listening skills
- Recognising social cues and knowing when someone wants to engage
- Understanding different communication styles (passive, assertive, aggressive)
- Recognising and managing emotions
- Understanding the emotions of others and how to respond
- Healthy vs unhealthy friendships and relationships
- Responding to bullying and conflict
- Appropriate and safe use of social media
Skills are taught using practical activities, visual supports, guided discussion and real-world scenarios to support understanding and generalisation beyond sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate in social skills programs?
PoDDSS social skills programs are suitable for children, teenagers and adults who want to build communication, confidence and social understanding. Programs are tailored to different ages, learning styles and individual goals, using a person-centred approach that respects each participant’s needs, preferences and pace of learning.
How are the programs delivered?
Programs are delivered in a structured and supportive environment using practical activities, visual resources and guided discussion. Sessions focus on real-life situations and skill development, helping participants practise communication, emotional awareness and social interaction in ways that can be applied confidently in everyday settings.
Can families or support staff be involved?
Yes. Families, carers and support staff can be involved where appropriate to support learning beyond sessions. PoDDSS also offers training programs and mentoring to help build shared understanding, encourage consistency and support the use of positive behaviour strategies across home, community and support environments.
How Our Programs Are Delivered
Social Skills Programs are delivered in one-to-one sessions, allowing participants to learn and practise skills in a supportive and personalised environment.
Sessions are facilitated by experienced practitioners who tailor activities and discussions to each participant’s needs, learning style and goals. This individual approach allows participants to build confidence at their own pace while focusing on the areas most relevant to their daily life.
Where appropriate, families or trusted support people may be involved to help reinforce learning outside of sessions and support consistency across home, community and support environments.
