Understanding The Reasons Behind Behaviours

At PoDDSS, we provide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) for NDIS-funded participants across Townsville and North Queensland. Our focus is on understanding why behaviours of concern occur and supporting individuals to build practical skills that improve quality of life, independence and participation.

We take a collaborative, person-centred approach — working alongside individuals, families, carers and support networks to develop strategies that are clear, achievable and meaningful. All supports are delivered respectfully, with a strong emphasis on dignity, choice and long-term outcomes.

Positive Behaviour Support at PoDDSS is designed to be implemented consistently across all settings of a person’s life, including home, community, education and support environments.

Positive Behaviour Support at PoDDSS involves structured behavioural assessments conducted in line with the Disability Act 2006, leading to the development of personalised Positive Behaviour Support Plans (PBSPs).

These assessments help identify the factors influencing behaviour and inform strategies that are proactive, ethical and focused on sustainable change. Depending on individual needs, support may include:

  • Proactive and reactive behaviour strategies
  • Sensory and environmental recommendations
  • Communication approaches that support social skills and independence
  • Training and guidance for families, carers and support staff

As the service provider, PoDDSS actively supports the implementation of behaviour support plans, providing guidance and feedback to support consistency and positive change across environments.

FAQs Icon
  • What is positive behaviour support?

Positive behaviour support is an evidence-based, person-centred approach that focuses on understanding why behaviours occur and supporting positive change. It aims to improve quality of life by building skills, adjusting environments and using proactive strategies rather than punishment or restrictive practices.

  • Who can access positive behaviour support services?

Positive Behaviour Support is available to NDIS participants, generally aged 7 years and over, who have approved funding for behaviour support. Services are available across Townsville and surrounding North Queensland regions.

  • What is included in a Positive Behaviour Support Plan?

A Positive Behaviour Support Plan may include:

    • Identification of factors influencing behaviour
    • Proactive strategies to prevent behaviours of concern
    • Reactive strategies to support safety and wellbeing
    • Communication, sensory and environmental recommendations
    • Guidance for families, carers and support staff

Plans are tailored to the individual’s strengths, needs and everyday environments.

  • Do families and support staff receive training?

Yes. Where appropriate, PoDDSS provides training, mentoring and guidance to families, carers and support staff to help ensure behaviour support strategies are applied consistently and confidently.

  • How do I know if my NDIS plan covers behaviour support?

Behaviour support is typically funded under Specialist Behavioural Intervention Support or Behaviour Management Plan funding. If you’re unsure, our team can help review your plan and explain your options.
